This movie takes a lot of liberty with what happened, and though I'm not an expert on her life, I know enough to know that she wasn't widely regarded as a literary genius in her time nor was she even that popular certainly not enough that she has adoring fans everywhere she went, like was portrayed in the movie.
As far as I've read, Jane didn't really have some tragic history with love and certainly didn't have every guy tripping over themselves to marry her like in the movie.
If you're looking for an entertaining period drama, I'd say look elsewhere. If you take out the historical inaccuracy and try to watch it just as a story about a single lady who is a writer in Georgian times, it's okay.
Not bad but not great. However, Jane is not a likable character. She's rude and cruel to most everyone she meets.
She is unimpressed with everyone and is constantly mocking them to their faces. While she is witty about it, the fact is that she still is a meanspirited person.
There are aspects of the character that are intriguing, but mostly, I just didn't care what happened to her. Frankly, I wanted more of Cassandra who has a really tragic history with love that is never touched on in the movie.
Or I would have loved to see more of the conflict between her and the rest of her family. But instead, we mostly get a sad woman who seems to drink a lot and constantly mocks others.
The movie seems to skim over important things, like Jane's death which happens offscreen or the Austen family politics, and instead, focuses on Jane desperately throwing herself at anything male that moves.
So many reviews that were not reviews of the film, but of describing the disappointment with technical snafus that prohibited people from viewing it.
Hoping that those who want to see this will choose the streaming option for seeing it because it has great merit.
Jane Austin and her novels explained so well. The plight of women who were poor in her era, and in Austin's case, the plight of a woman with immense talent and wit who was poor.
If you are a fan of Austen's work this is definitely worth watching. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some may find her portrayal as too abrupt, even abrasive, but given the choices she made in her life and the prolific writer she was I think she did have a strong and possibly abrasive personality that was tinged with a wicked sense of humor.
She would have had to in order to make some an impact at that time in history when women were not only frowned upon for having their own, self-made career, but some were even ridiculed and abused.
Hooray for this brave portrayal of a woman who was brave in her choices and setting the terms of how she would live her life while also being so very kind and generous with those whom she loved.

Considering that her letters were burnt by Cassandra, and all the facts we have if both of the sisters is large told by their brothers and their children, I love the adaptation of this film.
It goes hand in hand with much that is known, and is a very realistic experience of his life was for single, unmarried woman in that age and time.
They suffered and I liked how we got to see Janes point of view in the same style we get to see it written in the books.
Her dry but infectious wit and humor, yet the rawness of how she must have suffered through her illness. The feelings one has for family, and the sisterly bond and love between both Jane and Cassandra.
Which is, I find, so much more gratifying and heartbreaking than the romance cliche they interpreted in the newer films. I can only assume that Jane was written to mirror the lead characters she's created; or maybe she's written to mirror contemporary ideas about how interesting women act.
I don't know. Maybe the fact that the character just comes off as a bitter person hiding behind snarkiness and a smile highlights how talented Jane Austen was: she created female leads that are still appreciated and embraced to this day.
I wish the idea of a contemporary, interesting woman didn't always look like a jerk. Even worse is when these characters get offended by others and suddenly they're the victim.
A most delightful film. I believed they were the actual people in Jane Austen's life. Would've been better had it been a little longer and a little deeper.
But all in all, totally worth it. I do so love films of this era. Life was less complicated and people made do. The costumes were brilliant.
The scenery made me feel as if I were watching the actually happenings of Miss Austen's life and time period.
Bravo for a film well done. If you are a super fan of Jane Austen, this is not a historic movie on her life. Its a fun look at her with her brothers and sister and mother.
I did enjoy, fine acting and costumes are lovely. The backdrop scenery is beautiful. A fun watch for a rainy day. See all reviews.
